Dear Professor Delamare:

I hope this letter finds you well. Although I have already attended two sessions of your class, I haven’t yet had the chance to formally introduce myself. My name is David Diop, a freshman who has recently enrolled here at City College as a Computer Science major. I was born here in the city and raised in the Bronx by my family who had moved here from Senegal about a year before I was born. In my youth, I developed an interest in programming, as I’ve always been enamored with creating things. This interest is what eventually set me on the path to pursuing a Computer Science Degree.

Throughout my teen years I taught myself several programming languages, beginning with HTML and JavaScript. Learning to create websites was fun, but my programming interest truly blossomed when I learned Python. This general-purpose language opened the door to countless possibilities as I spent a great amount of time working on many diverse and creative projects. These projects showed me just how much potential this technology had, further captivating me. Eventually, when it was time to think about college and my future career, it only felt natural to pursue a field that would allow me to embrace my hobby and utilize the skills I’d developed full time. That’s what motivates me to study computer science, which will allow me to do what I love not only for myself, but for the good of others as well.

Computer Science is a large and diverse field, that provides those who study it with a wide range of career options. I personally have always had an interest in the scientific side of the discipline. This can include the study and development of new tools and technologies, topics such as machine learning, as well as the still developing field of quantum computing. Ideas such as these interest me because of their massive potential to improve society. Although, during my time at CCNY, I plan to not only explore these areas but areas that are still unknown to me, such as computer gaming, web design, and much more. By engaging in a diverse set of classes and internships, I hope to learn more about myself and what clicks with me the most.

As for the far future, although nothing is set in stone, and my interests may change as I explore other subfields of computer science, I believe my primary area of interest will still be in the development of the technologies mentioned earlier. Machine learning, for instance, is already being integrated into all kinds of devices with uses ranging from medical diagnosis, to self-driving cars, to the countless ideas that have yet to be conceived. Then there’s quantum computing, which through the use of qubits rather than traditional bits for processing information, could theoretically perform calculations far faster than the computers we have today. With these technologies in tow, the future has the potential to be something incredible and I would be truly thrilled to be a part of its development.

I hope this letter provided a good introduction to who I am and what I strive for, and I look forward to us getting to know each other more over the coming semester.

Sincerely,

David Diop
